Abstract:The Magallanes region has great energy potential for renewable energy: wind and marine energies. However, its energy matrix still continues to depend heavily on natural gas, giving it a certain energy fragility by depending only on a single non-renewable resource. On the other hand, the quality and abundance that the wind resource has in the Magallanes region is internationally recognized, with capacity factors over 50% which makes the region a place with optimal conditions to generate a large amount of renewable electricity at a very low cost. It is known that a large percentage of the production cost of green H2 depends on the cost of electricity required for the electrolysis process. Therefore, the Magallanes region, with a wind potential considered the largest in Chile, could become a relevant international player with the potential to produce 13% of the world's green H2, according to latest studies by the Chilean Ministry of Energy. The presentation will show aspects related to the projections of this new industry, the opportunities that arise and the challenges that must be faced.
